H. M. (Helen Mary) Hoover, daughter of Edward Lehr and Sadie (Schandel) Hoover, was born in 1935 in Stark County, Ohio. She attended Mount Union College in Ohio and the Los Angeles County School of Nursing in California. After six months, she decided not to pursue a nursing career, but continued college work at the Los Angeles City College. She went on to hold several office positions before deciding in 1969 to give up traditional jobs and pursue a career in writing. Her first book, a juvenile fiction title, Children of Morrow, was published in 1973. Her second book, The Lion`s Club, was a children`s historical novel set in Russia. After that, Hoover tended to stay with her first love, juvenile science fiction. She has also contributed to two books on writing: Anatomy of Wonder: A Critical Guide to Science Fiction; and The Whole Truth – And Other Myths: Retelling Ancient Tales.  She has also been a contributor to the periodical Language Arts. H.M. Hoover currently resides in Burke, Virginia.

Awards:
The Lion’s Club was selected as a Children’s Book of the Year by the Child Study Association of America, and one of the American Library Association’s “Best Books for Young Adults,” both 1974; Another Heaven, Another Earth was selected as one of the American Library Association’s “Best Books for Young Adults,” 1981, and received the Ohioana Award, 1982; Central Missouri State College Award for outstanding contribution to children’s literature, 1984; Parents Choice Honor Award, 1987, for OrvisThe Dawn Palace was selected as one of the American Library Association’s “Best Books for Young Adults,” named to Enoch Pratt Library’s “Youth to Youth Books List,” and received Parents Choice Honor Award, all in 1988.
