Read Around Ohio: Tiger Force: A True Story of Men and War

Michael Sallah & Mitch Weiss

(Toledo)

Tiger Force: A True Story of Men and War (2006) is the culmination of then-Toledo Blade reporters Michael Sallah and Mitch Weiss’ extensive research and reporting on the atrocities committed by the elite fighting unit Tiger Force during the Vietnam War.

Beginning as a series of investigative reports that ran in the Toledo Blade in 2003, for which Sallah and Weiss (with Joe Mahr) were awarded the 2004 Pulitzer Prize in Investigative Reporting, Tiger Force details the indiscriminate rape, torture and murder of unarmed Vietnamese villagers from May to November 1967.

Despite several whistleblowers within the unit, and an investigation by the Army’s Criminal Investigation Command, no charges were ever filed.

Sallah won win a second Pulitzer Prize in 2007, with the Miami Herald, and went on to work at Washington Post. Currently, he is the investigations editor for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Weiss is an investigative reporter for the Associated Press, and author and co-author of numerous other books of non-fiction.
